Coping as a Carer

Welcome to our Coping as a Carer self-help page. Here will explain how to cope as a carer, and give practical suggestions for what you can do and where you can go for support

What is a Carer?

If you are responsible for supporting someone else, whether this is mentally, emotionally, physically, socially or a combination of any of these, you are a carer. Carers are unpaid and may find themselves supporting loved ones, friends or neighbours.

The support you offer might include:

  • Helping someone with their finances
  • Collecting medication
  • Assisting the person with appointments and medical treatment
  • Cooking, cleaning, bathing and other aspects of personal care
  • Reading and communicating information such as benefit letters
  • Interpreting if English is not their first language
  • Providing social support
