What is The Sanctuary?

This is our flagship, award winning crisis service. The Sanctuary provides a calm, safe space for adults experiencing mental distress. It is often used as an alternative to hospital admission.

The Sanctuary is operated by Mind in Bradford, in partnership with ‘Sharing Voices’ and ‘First Response’. This service is open 365 days a year from 7-11pm.

The First Response service is operated by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust and offers support 24 hours a day, seven days a week to people of all ages living in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale or Craven experiencing a mental health crisis.

What are the aims of The Sanctuary?

The Sanctuary aims to support people in order to help them resolve or better manage their personal crisis. We work around the four key elements of effective emotional support:

    • Listening with empathy
    • Treating visitors with warmth, kindness and respect
    • Ensuring visitors do not feel judged or assessed
    • Providing a calm and non-clinical environment

    Who can use The Sanctuary?

To access The Sanctuary, you, or someone acting on your behalf, must initially call First Response on 01274 221 181. First Response will then decide which service is most suitable for your needs, and make a referral accordingly. They may decide that a referral to The Sanctuary is the most appropriate course of action.

During your visit, you can choose to be accompanied by a person of your choice. We can, if necessary, arrange for transport.

The Sanctuary is currently able to receive those over the age of 18 who live within the Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale or Craven Districts. Visitors to the Sanctuary may include people who:

    • Experience anxiety or panic attacks
    • Have suicidal thoughts and feel unsafe, but do not intend to end their life
    • Have self-harmed but do not require medical attention
    • Are disassociating
    • Are intensely depressed
    • Hear voices but know that the voices are not real
    • Experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
    • Feel overwhelmed and unable to cope

Regrettably, The Sanctuary is not suitable for anyone:

    • Under the age of 18
    • Who is intoxicated or has taken street drugs
    • Whose behaviour is violent and uncontrolled
    • Presenting with symptoms of psychosis
    • Who has already overdosed or who has immediate plans to
    • Who has definite plans to end their life
    • Who has self-harmed and requires medical attention.

What do people who have used this service say?

What a motley crew of staff here! Yet together they have formed a perfect team with a huge range of complimenting strengths...   ...And great at advising, stepping in when necessary, always alongside each other delivering a consistent approach

I love and appreciate the feeling within the Sanctuary. Very ease to open up in this environment amongst the very talent and hardworking staff

You are all amazing. I have never felt judged can tell you anything. I feel so at home here and leave feeling so, so much better. Thank you. I hope this service is around for a long time because it was badly needed!

Always felt safe, secure and heard. Never judged or looked down on. Always feel better/improved when I leave. Thank you for this place

Should be more places like this. No clinical stuff

Sanctuary = Exactly what it is! And if felt that from my first visit
